Types of Miners

Currently Helium allows mining with two types of miners, IoT/LoRaWAN miners, and MOBILE/5G miners.

IoT

IoT miners utilize LoRaWAN networking technology and antennas to provide long range, low bandwidth, and low power use connectivity coverage for IoT (internet of things) devices. IoT miners earn HNT (soon to be IoT) for providing Proof of Coverage as well as for any data transferred by the miner.

MOBILE

Helium 5G miners utilize Magma Mobile Core networking technology and CBRS radios to provide 5G cellular coverage for cell phones and other compatible devices. MOBILE miners earn MOBILE for providing Proof of Coverage as well as for any data transferred by the miner.

The Bobber 500 is Bobcat's first step into the upcoming Helium 5G data offloading space. This product is not a newer version of the Bobcat Miner 300 nor the Bobber 200. The Bobber 500 is a dual purpose miner, capable of providing both traditional Helium LoRaWAN coverage to mine the upcoming IOT token (currently HNT) as well as Helium 5G/CBRS coverage to mine MOBILE token. It is also compatible with all FreedomFi certified Small Cell radios as well as being future proof and compatible with new radios as they become FreedomFi certified. The Bobber 500 is built with significantly different hardware than the Bobcat Miner 300 and Bobber 200 to in order to facilitate the fast processing and high throughput needed for 5G data offload and boasts a Quad-core Atom x6413e 3.0GHz processor, 4GB of DDR4L memory, 64 GB of M.2 SATA III SSD storage, and two gigabit Ethernet ports for WAN and radio connections. For full hardware specifications on the Bobber 500, check out our hardware breakdown article. The Bobber 500 is a Full Hotspot capable platform which is also capable of running Helium's new Light Hotspot software.

Bobber 200

Coming Soon!

The Bobber 200 is Bobcat's first Light Hotspot only platform. This product is not an older version of the Bobcat Miner 300 or Bobber 500. The Bobber 200 is a Helium LoRaWAN mining platform running Light Hotspot software and will feature different hardware specifications than the Bobcat Miner 300 which will allow for Helium mining at a reduced price point. Check back in the near future for hardware specifications when the Bobber 200 launches!
